With a touch Mercie Winters can see into other people memories, but the one thing she wants the most—her father’s identity—still eludes her. Estranged from her adoptive family, she falls in love with a stranger she meets in the woods.

Zane Fairfield becomes addicted to her because of the power he feels in her touch. He is rich and handsome, but their affair, which begins as adventurous and erotic, turns obsessive and dark. Things change when on Thanksgiving Day he takes Mercie to meet his mother.

His mother’s house has halls that move and rooms that disappear. And Zane, angry with her over a broken promise, abandons her to the whims of the house and its strange denizens including his dangerous and otherworldly mother. Mrs. Fairfield wields power over her son, over the town, and everyone she meets. She knows the name Mercie has long wanted to hear, though the payment she asks for is high. But Mercie hardly has time to think about what she is willing to pay because first she must escape the house.
